FELA! (the broadway musical) makes historic arrival in Lagos, Nigeria from April 20 – 25,
The heavy buzz FELA! is creating all over Lagos could not have been the same anywhere else. The arrival of the crew to reconstruct the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel to look like the Broadway Theatre in New York has further aroused the expectation of Lagosians.
The lengthy journey of the show in Lagos will begin on April 14 with a concert version of the show by the original cast of FELA!, who insists on paying homage to the subject of this award-winning musical, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, and to his family at Fela’s spiritual home – the New Africa Shrine.
On April 17, a strictly-by-invitation welcome reception would be held for cast and crew of FELA! at Eko Hotel. To the delight of many, the public would be treated to an Afro-beat Concert at a yet to be disclosed venue on April 18. Beeta Organisation (cinema-advocacy organization) in collaboration with Broadway will on April 19 hold talks on how to propagate cinema culture in Nigeria.
The show proper will start April 20 with a red carpet event at the prestigious Eko Hotel and will run till April 25. Attracting 2,500 guests per show, FELA! will in all be showing eight times with two shows on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. With sponsors from big brands like Lagos State Government, Skye Bank, Sterling Bank, Chicken Republic, Quintessentially, Greygoose, Smooth 98.1FM, Cool FM, Wazobia FM, M-Net, Jack Daniels, Playboy Energy Drinks and more, FELA! is indeed in a class of its own.
Proof that Lagosians are highly expectant of the show is that Broadway officials testify that ticket sales had been awesome.
FELA!, an original Broadway musical produced by Shawn ‘JayZ’ Carter and Will Smith and directed by Bill T. Jones, tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician whose soulful Afro-beat rhythms and cutting lyrics ignited the spirit of empowerment and cultural awareness in a generation. The FELA! experience in Lagos would be wrapped up with a farewell party hosted by Quintessentially on April 26.
