A.C.N Petition Against My Victory Cannot Be Sustaind - Governor Suswam.
Governor Suswam |
The Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, on Wednesday said the petition filed against his victory in the April 26 election, by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Steve Ugba cannot be sustained.
The governor, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) told journalists in an interview in Abuja that the pattern of votes during the elections indicated that the ruling party was still the dominant political party in the state.
Mr Suswam said his lawyers are capable of handling his case, based on the facts available to them, adding that he was not scared by the ACN's petition.
The governor said that out of the 28 seats in the state House of Assembly, the PDP won 20. He also said that the PDP won eight out of the 11 seats available in the House of Representatives and two out of the three senatorial seats, leaving one for the ACN.
"You can see that the people of the state are for the PDP and they demonstrated their love for the party with the way they voted for us during the election," Mr Suswam said.
"The results from the conduct of National Assembly to the presidential election no doubt showed that we are on ground and there was no way that the people of the state could just change their minds when it was time for the governorship election."
No distraction
The governor said though the action of the ACN was meant to distract him from governance, he regarded it as beauty of democracy.
"If the judiciary does not have a role to play, the Constitution and the Electoral Act would have been silent on it," he said. "However, I want my opponent to know that we are all from Benue State and we will all return to the state. Therefore, in whatever we do, we should always have the interest of the people at heart. Because we have no other state than this, we should all join hands to make it better." Speaking on the alleged insecurity in his state, Mr Suswam said it was merely a propaganda hatched by his opponents with an intention to portray him as incapable of ruling the state.
Anyway only the tribunals that can prove this for now.
