An Amazon Has Passed Away-Laila Dogonyaro dies at 67

Garkuwan Garki, is dead. Hajiya Laila  died 
at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Kano after a brief illness.
A family source said she went to the hospital on Wednesday and was admitted after being diagnosed of malaria and typhoid but she subsequently died on Thursday 28 April 2011 at about 2pm.
Hajiya Laila, who lived most of her life in Kaduna, relocated to Kano from where she regularly journeyed to  her hometown, Garki in Jigawa state, where she was building a female hostel.
The late Garkuwan Garki  was born on the 10th December, 1944 in Kano and was formerly known as Laila Rasheed and has been Northern Nigeria’s most prominent women rights activist and politician in the last three decades.
Her name was most closely associated with the Jam’iyar Matan Arewa (JMA), the premier Northern women’s organisation where she  played a very prominent role in women’s struggle in the North and in Nigeria over the years.
Hajiya Laila died at the age of 67, leaving behind four children, among whom are Architect Mohammed Ahmed, a businessman, Hajiya Amina Dogonyaro and Hajiya Binta Dogonyaro, a Magistrate in Abuja, Isa Dogonyaro who works with the Economic and financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Hajiya was also friend of Benue Women i met her through my former boss Chief Mrs Margerat Icheen,the Former Speaker of Benue State of Assembly,she stood behind my boss when they impeachement dagger was coming to her side.Aside from that,Hajiya was a bossom friend of my mother inlaw,i reember all she told me about marriage when she visited Benue to recieve a Doctorate Degree awarded to her by Benue State University.
Hajiya will be remembered in her role in politics and her role in encouraging women in politics and Nation building.
