With the incessant cases of rape and child abuse reported almost on a daily basis now in Nigeria, it is not out of place to ask about what has become the fate of the much publicised condom with ‘teeth’ designed to catch rapists.

This female condom with jagged “teeth” that grips a man’s penis was widely publicised in the build up to South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup. According to a CNN news report then, the device was developed to catch rapists in South Africa: a country battling with one of the highest rape incidences in the world.

The condom called “Rape-aXe” is inserted by women like a tampon and its jagged teeth-like hooks inside attach to a man’s penis during intercourse. Once it grabs hold, only a doctor can remove it.

It’s high time the device is introduced into the Nigerian market to help stem the increasing nefarious activities of rapists.
