PDP Secretly Begging Aminu Tambuwal Not To Run For President In 2015.
Amidst speculation that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, will run for president in 2015 on an opposition platform, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday paid a closed-door visit to the House.
Anenih, who was accompanied by Prof Jerry Gana and other party leaders, said the visit was to discuss the insecurity in the country and other matters.
He stated that the relationship between the legislature and the executive as well as the legislature and the party also ranked high on the issues that led the BoT to the speaker, and noted that all the issues “would be discussed in a family manner.”
Chief Anenih further remarked that the call for a sovereign national conference by some sections of the society had been made irrelevant by the presence of a legislature.
“I have said it to people asking for Sovereign National Conference that there is nothing national as National Assembly”, he said, noting that .
In his response, Tambuwal reminded the delegation that the House “will always work with the executive to keep the promises we made to Nigerians and ensure that the party manifesto is translated to legislation”.
On the relationship between the legislature and the executive, he said the lawmakers had been working closely with the party and the executive arm of government “to do exactly what we have campaigned for on the platform of our party”, adding, “we are here to serve as checks against the executive, which is our constitutional role.”
To this end, he said that the legislative arm of government would continue to give Nigeria the best as representatives of the people.
On the relationship with the party, he gave them assurance that he was committed to “our party.”
A mild drama, however, ensued when the minority leader of the House, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila stumbled upon the meeting and was told by a surprised Tambuwal that the meeting was for PDP members only.
But a determined Gbajabiamila went straight to the Chairman of PDP BoT, Chief Tony Aneinh, who jokingly told him to sit beside him and be offered a PDP ticket, saying “we will meet in 2015”.
The meeting between Anenih and the leadership of the House ended at about 6:35pm.
When accosted by journalists with the question as to why he was at the National Assembly to see the speaker, Anenih parried the question and declared that “I am a politician and I came to see my fellow politicians.”
