Makurdi Old Bridge, Sai Missionary Site Katsina-Ala And Oju Traditional Iron Smelting Site In Benue To Be Declared National Monuments.


The National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) has listed three cultural heritages in Benue State among the 100 monuments and sites to be declared national monuments as part of activities to commemorate Nigeria's centenary.

Director General of NCMM Yusuf Abdallah disclosed this in Makurdi during a stakeholders sensitization workshop held for participants drawn from the North-central geopolitical zone of the country.
Abdallah said21 monuments drafted from states in the North-central zone in addition to the three sites located in Benue are being proposed to be added to the already existing 65 declared national monuments from 22 states of the federation.

According to him, the creation of Nigeria has brought together the cultural heritage of multiple ethno-geographic groups to create a single collective national heritage and cultural identity.

Speaking with reporters  the Benue State NCMM curator, Mrs. Biebnyaan Bitiyong said the three monuments proposed for the state include; Makurdi Old Bridge, Sai Missionary Site in Kastina-Ala and Oju Traditional Iron Smelting site.
