UN Rights Chief Visits Nigeria To Encourage Rights Protection.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has arrived Nigeria on a four day official visit with a promise to encourage the government on the protection of human rights.
Pillay, told a forum of representatives of the National Human Rights Commission, Civil Society Organizations and local film actors that she’s looking for positive things that have been done and to acknowledge what the government is doing.

“I’m not here to come and criticise. I’m here to encourage them to do more to protect everyone’s human rights,” Pillay said.
Pillay’s mission to Abuja is the first by any UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in 20 years of the creation of the office, her office said in a statement.

Pillay’s visit is also on the invitation of the Nigerian government.
She said the objectives of the visit are engagement with the government of Nigeria, national and international stakeholders on the promotion and protection of human rights in the country and strengthening Nigeria’s collaboration with the UN mechanism.

The group of civil rights activists in a presentation listed what it perceived as human rights violations in Nigeria.
The group told Pillay that “corruption and impunity are the key human rights issues facing the country today.”
