Yours Truly,Fabmimi,( Human Rights Worker).@NHRC.

Fabmimi

I’m excited about the UN focus on social media and human rights. Given events in the Northern part of Nigeria and elsewhere this year. How news travels fast these days courtesy of Social Media and how we react to them. Before we see these stories on TV ,eyewitness would have shared them on Social Media. During 2011 we witnessed how the Internet and social media applications can gave voice to Nigerian voters, helping to promote democratic change, raising awareness of human issues and enabling people to access and exercise their basic rights. We’ve seen how an open and accessible Internet can enable free expression and a wide range of other human rights but also, that many people face huge battles in simply claiming these rights, and repressive governments can use these same technologies to suppress and undermine.
A human right is something you're entitled to just for being human. You deserve to live in safety wherever you are, free from unjust arrest and torture, for example. These rights extend to women, children, the elderly, the disabled and minorities. Generally human rights workers deal with violations from the state against its people. There are many ways you can get involved.
Human rights emerged as a career path after the United Nations composed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights following World War II. These rights essentially comprise those that we see as justified because we are human. Human rights has blossomed into a career field involving different types of workplaces, work, education, skills and benefits and I recently joined the NHRC as a Human Rights worker am so excited about this because am passionate about people who's rights are violated and oppressed ,I have also suffered some form of violations from my former work place and am taking care of that.

Your Rights

These are rights naturally accruable to every person by virtue of his/her existence as a human being. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, under Chapter IV enumerates the following as fundamental human rights:-

Right to life
Right to dignity of human person
Right to personal liberty
Right to fair hearing
Right to private and family life
Right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion
Right to freedom of expression and the press
Right to peaceful assembly and association
Right to freedom of movement
Right to freedom from discrimination on the grounds of ethnic group, place of origin, circumstance of birth, sex, religion or political opinion.
Right to compensation for property compulsorily acquired
The above rights are classified under Chapter IV of the Constitution as Fundamental Rights. However, there are other rights under Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy provided under Chapter II of the Constitution. These include the right to:

Free and compulsory education
Adequate health care, gainful employment
Shelter, food etc
The former are justiceable rights, i.e. citizens could go to court to enforce them if denied. The latter rights are however non-justiceable, i.e. these set of rights are not enforceable in the court. They are aspirations attainable if and when the State has the resources. However, the Commission believes the two sets of rights are both fundamental and complementary. This is because; the right to life, for instance, is meaningless without gainful employment or food to sustain life in the first place. The Commission has made a strong case for the upgrading of Economic, Social and Cultural rights to fundamental rights. Human Rights are interdependent, interrelated, indivisible and universal.
