Benue Killings: Army Begins Major Offensive.

Following  the unending attacks and killing of hundreds of people in several Fulani headsmen/farmers clashes in Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states, the Nigerian Army said, yesterday, that it has commenced a major military operation to rid the area of such clashes.

Consequently, it said the target of the operation will include bringing an end to activities of criminal gangs as well as all armed groups roaming the towns and villages of states in the area who were committing mayhem.

A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade said, "The Nigerian Army, yesterday, commenced a major operation to put an end to activities of all armed men and criminal gangs who have been engaging in wanton killing and destruction of lives and property in three states of North Central part of Nigeria.

"Troops have already been deployed for a major offensive which is covering Benue, Nassarawa and Plateau States. The Internal Security Operations is meant to capture and neutralize all the enclaves of criminal gangs. The Nigerian Air Force, Police and other security agencies are also participating in the operation designed to restore peace in the affected states."

The statement added that "Law abiding citizens are enjoined to cooperate by providing timely and useful information to facilitate the operation as it affects their localities".
