Legendary Actress Ruby Dee Passes Away at 91

It’s a sad day today as we have lost another icon.
Legendary actress, rights activist and one of a kind class act Ruby Dee passed away yesterday at her home in New York, living a full, long life until the age of 91.

Born in Cleveland in 1922, Ruby started her career in 1946, going on to become a star on stage and film including A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Do The Right Thing (1989), Jungle Fever (1961), The Jackie Robinson Story (1950), American Gangster (2007), Betty & Coretta (2013), and Black Girl (1972). Three years after divorcing her first husband blues singer Frankie Dee, Ruby married iconic actor, poet, and playwright Ossie Davis, who passed away back in 2005. The two partnered on many projects together throughout the years, including an autobiography “With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together” where they talked about their careers, activism, and marriage.

Celebrities like Debbie Allen, Rev. Al Sharpton, Anika Noni Rose, Malinda Williams, Mike Epps, and more took to Twitter today to pay their respect:

Ruby is survived by three children: Nora, Hasna and Guy, and seven grandchildren.
