Buruku Fed Constituency Bye Election In Benue To Hold On October 18 ,2014.
The Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) in Benue State has
announced October 18, as the new date for Buruku federal constituency election.
The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Baba Abba Yusuf, told correspondent in Makurdi, that the commission fixed the new date, following directives from its head office to do so.
The election, which was scheduled for August 23, was postponed as a result of a court injunction.
The Supreme Court had sacked the All
Progressive Congress (APC) Orker Jev from the House of Representatives and affirmed his replacement with Sekav Iyortyom, as the candidate of the party to stand for the election.
But Jev filed a fresh suit at the Supreme Court for his reinstatement while Iyortyom asked the apex court to declare him the rightful occupier
of the seat.
The commissioner reaffirmed that only three parties will be eligible to stand in the election and that the candidates of parties affected by the merger which constituted the APC shall not be part of the exercise.
Yusuf regretted the inconveniences and
assured stakeholders of INEC’s commitment to conduct free, fair and credible election.
