Jane Birkin Ask Hermes Group To Remove Her Name From The Iconic Hermès Satchel

Every true fashionista knows, as poignantly stated in a memorable Sex and the City scene, that the Hermès Birkin bag is not just a bag it's a status symbol. The French fashion house's iconic tote, which is made of leather and crocodile, typically retails for upward of $15,000 (or, in some cases, as much as several hundred thousand dollars) and instantly communicates a few things about its owner: style, stature, and (yes) wealth.

Well, Hermès might have a problem on its hands. According to a read on US blogsites and  from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Jane Birkin a style icon and the bag's namesake for more than three decades now is asking the brand to remove her name from the product entirely.

"Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name, I have asked the Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag," Birkin says in the statement.

We admire Birkin for sticking to her guns on this one, and we have to wonder: What is Hermès going to do? Rename the bag per her request? And if so, to what?!
