Nigeria Heads UN Security Council.
The one month rotational presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council has now gotten to the turn of Nigeria, Nigerian Tribune. The council is the topmost position of the UN most influential body. Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary to the United Nations has since taken over from Ambassador Gerald Bohemen, the Permanent Representative of New Zealand, who held the presidency for the month of July, 2015.
In the history of the UN, this would be the first time that an elected member of the Security Council would assume presidency for the fourth time in two separate tenures.
Recall that Nigeria was elected a non-permanent member of the security council on October 17, 2013.This will be the fifth time since independence that Nigeria will head the decision making organ of the UN.
In a statement signed by Dr Tope Elias-Fatile, Nigeria’s return to the council, after having left in December 2012, was described as representing one of the shortest periods in the history of the United Nations, that a member state had served two terms in the council.
While attending a plenary session of the 3rd United Nations Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Tuesday, July 14, Nigeria’s vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbanjo pleaded with the international community to set up a global body which will tackle financial corruption in Africa.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Population Fund has revealed that 160,000 Nigerians have left the North east region of Nigeria to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, mainly Niger, Chad and Cameroun.
