UNHCR Donates 100 Unit Houses For Displaced Persons In Daudu,Benue State.


The United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees has raised a 200 persons capacity camp of 100 unit of houses in Daudu, Guma local government area to carter for the accommodation challenges of those displaced by the Fulani insurgency.

Conducting the Secretary to the State Government Barr. Targema Takema round the camp today, Chairman, BENGONET, a Coalition of NGOs in Benue State and technical partners to the project Barr. Justin Gbagir explained that about 73 IDPs have taken refuge in the facility. He maintained that the camp was built basically to accommodate the most vulnerable which include the aged, widows, and children.

He stated that total utilization of the camp has been delayed as a result of lack of basic amenities like water, toilets and kitchen space which were to be executed with a 15million naira support promised the body by the previous government and called on the new administration to come to the aid of the UNHCR to enable them complete the project.
In his address, UNHCR Head of Field Office, Makurdi Field Unit Sam Agwa thanked the host community and the Ter Guma Chief Unongo for providing 15 plots of land for the project and creating a conducive and peaceful atmosphere for the body to carry out her activities. He stated that the UNHCR has intentions to extend the gesture to Zones A and B but only a commitment on the side of the state government can make the expansion of the project realistic.
In a remark, secretary to the state government Barr. Targema Takema described the UNHCR intervention as a commendable initiative adding that the gesture will to a large extent reduce the sufferings of those exposed to tortuous sunlight and torrential rainfalls and called on well meaning individuals, groups and corporate bodies to support the UN.
The SSG who promised to liaise with the governor Chief Dr. Samuel Ortom to ensure that the state fulfills her obligation in terms of counterpart funding to enable the body complete her projects also urged the community to see the project as a collective agenda to bring hope and comfort to the displaced and not a profit making venture and advised them to support and protect the project.
