FG Drops Charges Against Leader Of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The Federal Government has dropped the charges it filed against the executive director of Radio Biafra and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
The Federal Government through the Department of State Services, DSS, had arrested and arraigned Mr. Kanu before the Chief Magistrates Court in Wuse, over allegations that he solicited for weapons to fight for the creation of a Biafra Republic.

His detention generated widespread protests in the South-east and some parts of the South-south by his supporters, who called for his unconditional release.

In a ruling on Wednesday, the Magistrate, Shuaibu Usman, discharged Kanu and struck out the case filed against him after the DSS prayed the court to withdraw the case so that a higher court, which has jurisdiction to entertain charges bordering on terrorism, can take over.

It would be recalled that during a hearing on his bail application on Monday, counsel to the DSS, Mosses Idakwo, told a Federal High Court in Abuja that Kanu was sponsoring terrorism against Nigeria.

Mr. Idakwo claimed that the DSS had evidence of bank accounts owned by Mr. Kanu, who holds dual citizenship of Britain and Nigeria, where monies (both in dollars and pound sterling) were allegedly used for financing acts of terrorism against the country.

He, therefore, urged the court to deny the bail application by the accused’s lawyer, Vincent Obeta.

After listening to arguments and counter-arguments of the two counsels, the judge said he would look into the matter and fixed Thursday, December 17, to deliver ruling on bail for Mr. Kanu.
