Lawmakers Are Now Irritated With ''Change Of Names'' In National Dailies..

A mild drama played out on Thursday when members of the House of Representatives debated a motion seeking to curb the "high number" of change of names carried by newspapers in the country which they termed "a threat to national security."
The motion, sponsored by Rep Nuhu Danburan (APC, Kano), frowned at the number of pages on the national dailies that carry change of names of Nigerians.
Danburan called on the House to investigate the situation, with a view to reversing the trend as a proactive measure for national security.
However, soon after the presentation of the motion, differing views from members ensued, with many describing the motion as being "speculative on national security."
Rep Simon Arabo (PDP, Kaduna), cited Section 39 of the 1999 constitution, where freedom of expression for all Nigerians was guaranteed.
But Rep Garba Datti (APC, Kaduna) said the motion was timely, in view of how national dailies carry "5-10 pages of change of names" on a daily basis, which calls for concern.
The motion eventually narrowly scaled through, with some committees tasked to investigate the issue.
