Benue NUJ Elects New Exco.
Few months after the sacking of the state Working Committee members over alleged corrupt practices, a new leadership was, weekend, elected for the Benue State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, with the Sports Editor of the state-owned Voice Newspaper, Mr. Chris Atsaka, emerging as the new council Chairman.
In a process supervised by officers from NUJ National Secretariat, Mr. Atsaka polled a total of 165 votes to beat his closest rival, Mr. Terlumun Vaatia, who recorded 57 votes, while Mr. King Abu pulled out of the race few minutes to commencement of voting. Miss Victoria Yina of Radio Benue, emerged Vice Chairman; Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Agbe of the State Information. Auditor, Financial Secretary and Treasurer were returned unopposed, and by-election will be held to fill the vacant position of Assistant Secretary.

In his acceptance speech the new Chairman of the council, Mr. Chris Atsaka promised to run an open door administration with the welfare of members being of top most priority of the new leadership of the council. Atsaka promised to work as a team with the new executives to restore confidence in the leadership of the union and also ensure that the dignity of practicing journalists in the state was fully restore. He said, “this is the dawn of a new era in our council; and it will definitely usher in a season of welfarism and professionalism for all members of the union; I urge all members of the union to work as team and also lend support to the new administration in the task of taking our profession to higher heights”, he added.
