Australian Govt Spent N130m To Provide Water In Benue, FCT Communities In 2015

The Australian Government says it spent approximately 130 million naira in 2015 to provide water for rural communities in Benue and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Australian High Commission, in a statement by Hope Ayabina, Public Affairs Officer of the High Commission, said the projects were under its Direct Aid Programme.

The High Commission said that the projects were in recognition of the difficulties experienced by rural communities in accessing clean water.
The High Commission said it was working to building a better future for Nigerian communities and had funded a number of projects across the country to assist those in need.
It said so far in 2016, it had commissioned a number of solar powered boreholes in Bwari Area Council in the FCT and Gwer East Local Government Area of `Benue.

“The boreholes will reduce the likelihood of water borne diseases and alleviate the need to travel long distances to access clean water.

“Australia’s Direct Aid Programme has supported Soroptimist International, an NGO, to install three solar-powered boreholes.

“These boreholes were sunk in Sumpe and Sherepe communities in Bwari Area Council and the Kwalita community in Gwagwalada Area Council and commissioned on Feb. 13, 2016,” it said.
It added that through the management of Concern Universal, the Australian Government was pleased to fund the repair and development of 13 boreholes across Benue.
The High Commission said the 13 boreholes, which were commissioned in Gwer East LGA on Febuary 23, brought clean and safe water to about 6,500 people.
