CDHR Defends Street Hawkers Accused Of Damaging BRT Buses
The Committee for Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, has taken up the defence of street hawkers charged with the damaging of 48 buses belonging to the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, scheme. The human rights body indicated its willing to represent the street hawkers, who had none, at Thursday’s resumed hearing.
Comrade Alex Omoteyinse, Lagos Chairman, CDHR, said the boys were “innocent”.
“We cannot allow them (the street hawkers) to remain in the police custody; the boys are innocent.
Omoteyinse accused the Lagos State Government of using the case “as cover up for the BRT driver, who knocked down the deceased hawker.”
The presiding Magistrate Fowowe Erusaife ordered the remand of the street hawkers in prison, while adjourning the case to 16 September, 2016.
