NHRC Boss, Prof Bem Angwe re-elected President of the West Africa' Human Rights Institutions in West Africa.#NHRC




The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Bem Angwe has been re-elected as the President of The General Assembly of the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa.

The election is one of the outcomes of the on-going annual general assembly of the network.
The conference which was attended by observers from the United Nations office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, ECOWAS Commission, ECOWAS Parliament, Community Court of Justice and the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.

Other Executive Member Countries of the Network are Togo, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana.

The Network which is made up of fourteen members of ECOWAS states with functional National Human Rights institutions was established in 2010 for the coordination of regional activities for the promotion and protection of human rights in West Africa.

This is in line with article 35 of ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

Professor Angwe’s Election qualifies Nigeria to head and coordinate the activities of all NHRIs in West Africa for the next three years.

This involves promoting, protecting and enforcing Human Rights of citizens of ECOWAS community and in conformity with the Paris principles.
