Former Super Eagles star Dejo Fayemi dies

Former Super Eagles and Shooting Stars star Dejo Fayemi has passed away at the age of 83.

According to reports, Fayemi is the first Nigerian to play at the old Highbury Stadium of Arsenal Football Club of England.

The former striker who was part of the Red Devils set-up (now Super Eagles) died on Friday morning at his residence situated at Odo-Ona Elewe, Ibadan.
The Oyo State Government has also paid a tribute to the Ibadan native.

In a telephone interview with the Punch, Oyo state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Abayomi Oke said: “I knew the late Fayemi personally. From my meeting with him, I realised what Nigeria was missing in our legends.

"We need the experience of such a committed legend who selflessly laid the foundation of football in this country. Oyo State will continue to mourn him for his contribution to the development of the game in the state and in Nigeria.

“I have directed that the NFF should be notified of his demise. We appreciate him but we have to submit to the will of God.”


He was part of the National team when they were referred to as the Red Devils, and was among the first set of Nigerians who travelled to England to play football just after Independence.

He had seven goals to show after his last international cap against Morocco in 1964 where Nigeria lost 2-1.

Pa Fayemi inspired the Ibadan Lions to win the then Challenge Cup in 1959 and 1961 after losing in the 1960 final.
