Magu: I’ll not be deterred on anti-graft war

He can no longer continue in office as EFCC boss – Senate

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu has stated that nothing would deterred him from fight against corruption.

The embattled EFCC boss stated this at the gates of the National Assembly after his screening for confirmation by the Senate.Addressing the Civil Society Group that had come in his solidarity, Magu said: “My piority is to fight corruption. My confirmation or not would not change anything. I will work until the last day whether confirmation or no confirmation.

“The greatest violation against human right is crime against the society and the humanity but everybody has a duty and responsibility to fight corruption and I also have a responsibility. I assure you that we will fight to finish.”

On if he was threatened by the allegations from the DSS, Magu said: “those allegations cannot stand the test of time because the allegations cannot be proven. You know, you can’t just raise mere allegations without given the person opportunity to answer you. 

There is issue of fundamental human rights, right of fair hearing is there. Up till this time DSS has not called me and I am even surprised that the same report is coming back and this time around it is signed by somebody which I doubt the genuineness of that report but I think we need to identify those who have the interest of this country at heart.

“What we are doing is to recover what has got lost before and protect the future of our children. So, if we don’t work today against corruption the future of our children is not guarantee. We must all wake up, wherever you find yourself fight corruption and anytime you discover that I am corrupt please expose me.”

Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday disclosed that its rejection of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, means the anti-graft boss has lost his capacity to act in that office.

This was disclosed by the Senate spokesman, Abdulahi Sabi, after plenary on Wednesday.Sabi said some senators, who were backing Magu’s confirmation, backed out because of his poor performance during plenary.

He insisted that the report of the Department of State Services (DSS) nailed the anti-graft boss because he failed the integrity test.According to him: “The rejection of Magu by the Senate signifies that he cannot continue in acting capacity.‎”
