House Disagrees With Senate On Devolution Of Power To States
The House of Representatives has disagreed with the Senate on the Bill seeking to devolve powers to states.
While the Senate had on Wednesday voted against the Bill, the House endorsed it during plenary on Thursday with 210 supporting the motion as against the 79 others who voted against it.
The Senate had, however, okayed the Bills seeking autonomy for local governments as well as reduced age limits for eligibility to run for political offices following appeals by a group of youths under the #NotTooYoungToRun movement.
Although there was a rowdy session in the House ahead of the commencement of voting, order was restored and voting commenced around midday.
Other sections of the fourth amendment of the 1999 Constitution being ammended include the Bill on Financial autonomy of state legislature, Bill to abrogate state joint local government accounts, Bill to strengthen local government administration, Bill for timely passage of bills on the matter of Presidential assent, among others.
