For a first year student of the Makurdi School of Nursing and Midwifery, Miss Stella Meeikyaa, life has become a tale of sorrows as the once charming, fair, beautiful girl has been burnt beyond recognition by an explosion which took place in her hostels in school about a month ago when one of her mate had called her to help look after the indomie she was cooking so she can rush downstairs to get something before coming back. It was then the gas went up in flames after some mins later. She suffered third degree burns and was admitted at the Intensive Care United  (ICU) of the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi apir.

The emergency nature of her condition motivated the medical experts to admit and attend to her. However, her unpaid bills for the 23 days she stayed at the ICU cumulatively has amounted to N228,000. In this time, her relatives have been making provision for her drugs and other needs.

This occurred when the Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom had travelled out of the country but he directed the Deputy Governor who visited and pledged the government’s intention to foot the hospital bills. The deputy governor, Engr. Benson Abounu also made a personal donation of N100,000 that was judiciously utilised in the purchase of her drugs and other needs.

The family can not boast of the resources to foot her bills and wish therefore to look out to the public who will be willing to help. Efforts to also reach the governor have proved unsuccessful. Currently, she has been transfered from the ICU to the Open Female Surgical Ward of the FMC Apir were more bills have been accumulated aside the  aforementioned. I wish to plead with persons close to the governor to inform him of this development so that he can help. Well meaning Nigerians should also please pity this daughter of ours faced with this terrifying experience and come to her aid.
