The GM BSUDB Mr Richard Agwa has expressed his heart-felt sympathy to victims of the flood that ravaged some areas in Makurdi, the capital city of the state, after a downpour recently.
The flood which submerged several houses also destroyed several properties, displaced hundreds of residents and paralysed activities
In a statement personally signed by the GM who posted it on Facebook he noted that the Board and other agencies have gone round the town to access the incident so as to brief the Governor. Read his release here....
Today, Sunday, August 27, 2017, some parts of Makurdi like Achusa, Welfare Quarters, Logo II and Naka road were flooded due to the heavy downpour of last night. Most families are affected by the flooding. Benue State Urban Development Board empathize with the affected families over the tragedy. We however thank God that no loss of life has been reported.
Government of Benue State through the relevant agencies like the Benue State Urban Development Board, the Commissioners for Information, Water Resources and Environment and Lands & Survey as well as the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency went round with reporters to get first hand information about the incident so as to brief His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom appropriately.
This flooding no doubt has caused discomfort to many families and our hearts are with them at this period. It should be noted that human activities have contributed in no small measure in causing this flood not forgetting the fact that the effects of global warming are manifesting all over the globe. As we speak, a well planned city like Houston in the United States of America is also flooded as well as many cities across the universe.
We at the Urban Development Board will continue to ensure that development activities are not carried on flood plains as we also appeal to residents of Makurdi to assist the government by de-silting drainages especially those in front of their houses.
We noticed during the assessment visits that the volume of surface water occasioned by building activities overwhelmed the existing drainages most of which are blocked by refuse. Houses that have been identified as blocking or obstructing the free flow of water must be demolished especially those built without approvals. We appeal to members of the public to show understanding as we embark on this exercise in no distant time as government will direct.
Finally, I commend the show of solidarity by residents of the affected settlements. They exhibited high levels of understanding and are willing to cooperate with the government in finding lasting solutions to the perennial flooding of Makurdi metropolis.
May the good Lord strengthen those affected families as we await further directives from His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Benue State.
