NHRC Staff Laud Nomination Of Tony Ojukwu As ES.




The management and staff of National Human Rights Commission(NHRC)have commended the Federal Government for the nomination of Mr. Anthony Okechechwu Ojukwu as the substantive Executive Secretary of the Commission, following the submission of Mr. Ojukwu's name for confirmation at the Senate, by President Muhammadu Buhari. 

Speaking on behalf of the staff, the Ag Executive Secretary Mrs. Oti Ovrawah 
said Mr. Ojukwu who happens to be the first Executive Secretary appointed from 
among the staff of the Commission is an experienced and versatile operational 
staff whom she described as a human rights defender.

Mrs Ovrawah further stated that the nomination could not have come at any 
better time than now, adding that Mr, Ojukwu is well equipped to deliver on the 
mandate of the Commission especially at this time when the Commission has to 
contend with emerging challenges in advancing the course of human rights in 
Nigeria.

While urging the Senate to fast track the confirmation process, Mrs Ovrawah 
called on the Federal Government to reconstitute the governing board of the 
Commission, in conformity with the Paris Principles governing such 
appointments.

The Acting Head of the Commission noted that the prolonged absence of a 
governing board could affect the ranking of the Commission at the Global 
Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Mr. Ojukwu joined the NHRC in 2001 and has at different times served as the  special Assistant, to a one time Executive Secretary of the Commission and also  to, a Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. He has  headed a zonal office and key head office operational sections of legal,   investigation and Monitoring departments of the Commission. 

At several times, he has championed the welfare of staff and pioneered several 
projects to improve the technical competence and efficiency of staff in delivering the Commission's mandate. 

He was also the project officer on the amendment  and passage of the NHRC Amendment Act 2010.
