United Nations Information Centre in collaboration with NHRC commemorates International Mother Language Day at Ireti Senior Grammar School Ikoyi.PHOTOS.
On this International Mother Language Day celebrated every year 21 February has 2018 theme as Linguistic Diversity and Multilingualism count for Sustainable Development. The United Nations Information Centre Lagos in commemoration of the day visited Ireti Senior Grammar School, Ikoyi, Lagos. While addressing the students, the Director of the Centre who was represented by the Knowledge Management Assistant Ms Bolanle Olumekor who spoke in Yoruba language stated that the event is to promote and focus on our mother language and see mother language as an intercultural connection and better ways of living together for sustainable development. She further noted that the United Nations in its human rights declaration in article 2 reiterates its commitment to linguistic diversity and multilingualism as essential for the promotion of peace and development.She also highlighted the Global Goals.
Ms Amaka of the National Human Rights Commission spoke in Pidgin about the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Director Co Curricular Science & Technology in Lagos Education District 3 Mrs Odunsi - Titus was present at the educational briefing.
Selected students were called to read some of the SDG Goals and some articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the three major languages in Nigeria including Pidgin.The Principal Mrs Azeez and staff of the school were all in attendance.It was an exciting time for the students.
