Police rescue Mikel Obi’s abducted father in Enugu



Pa Michael Obi abducted father of Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, have been rescued by the Enugu State Police Command.

Confirming the new development in his statement, spokesman of Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed that Pa Michael Obi and his driver, Ishaya John, were kidnapped last Friday along Makurdi – Enugu Road.

The statement reads in full;

“The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force through  its operatives of the 9thmile Division on Monday at 2:30 p.m. rescued Pa Michael Obi  and his driver one Ishaya John unhurt in Egede udi forest of Enugu State along old Egede Affa Road in Enugu.

“They were rescued hale and hearty and Pa Michael Obi and the driver have rejoined their family. It was gathered that Pa Obi  was allegedly abducted  along Makurdi -Enugu road  in the afternoon of 29/6/18 on his way from Jos in his grey colored Toyota pardon jeep with registration number MUS 604CG  and taken to unknown destination through the thick forest part of the area.

“It was further gathered that the abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before the operatives acting on intelligence information swooped on them where a gun duel ensued. This forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued.”


Amaraizu also added that Pa Obi extolled the efforts of the police which led to their rescue. He said that Mikel’s father thanked the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammad Danmallam, and the operatives for their efforts, saying:

“I am happy with the police operatives’ performance’’.

“I am alive and healthy. I thank the commissioner of police and the police operatives for their efforts which led to our rescue,’’ Amaraizu quoted Pa Obi as saying.



The police spokesman said that a team of doctors from the police medical unit conducted medical check-up on Pa Obi and confirmed that “he is hale and hearty’’. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, has lauded the efforts of the operatives as well as members of the public for their timely and useful information that led to the rescue.
