Unruly, incompetent policemen to be dismissed soon — PSC chairman

The Police Service Commission said on Tuesday that the commission would flush out policemen found to be undisciplined and incompetent, noting that promotion in the Force would now be based on competence.

The PSC Chairman, Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector-General of Police, stated this in Abuja when he met with a delegation from the West African Conflict and Security Team of the British High Commission and the United States Embassy in Nigeria.

A statement by the PSC’s Spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, quoted the chairman as saying the commission was “not comfortable with the current image of the police, an institution that has continued to receive a lot of bashing from the public,” noting that a retreat was underway to address the abnormalities.

Smith said, “The commission will not hesitate to flush out any policeman found to be undisciplined and incompetent. Recruitment and promotion in the Force will now be based on competence.

“The Nigeria Police Force is getting a lot of bashing; we are aware of our responsibility to sanitise the place and we are going to ensure that recruitment and promotion will henceforth be based on established rules and mainly on competence.

“The commission will give Nigerians a disciplined Force; a Force they will be proud of and one that will work within the dictates of the law and established rules and regulations.

“The commission is aware of the huge responsibilities before it and it is prepared to make a success of the challenges.”

The release said the delegation from the US and UK embassies pledged their support in the areas of institutional reforms in the police, community policing and capacity building.
