FEMALE PARLIAMENTARIANS PETITION NHRC.
Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission Tony Ojukwu Esq.had called on all political parties to ensure inclusion of women participation in the forthcoming elections to give them a sence of belonging in decision making as they constitute a large number of voters.
Ojukwu made this statement when the Conference of Female Parliamentarians led by Hon.Barry.Augusta Ude came to protest their exclusion from the just concluded party primaries across the country at the headquarters of the NHRC.
Hon Barr.Augusta Ude said the group Women Initiative for Affirmative Action, has over 64 members cutting across the country who suffered discrimination and disenfranchisement during the last primary election.She therefore called on the Commission to come to their rescue and protection the rights of women to participate in the 2019 election process.
Mr Ojukwu said the Commission will join the women in Nigeria to demand for their rights to participate in governance and push for a legal framework by way of a draft bill at the National Assembly.
The Executive Secretary promised to interface with INEC and Conference of Nigeria Political Parties to address the issues raised by the group adding that the participation of women in the elections is critical to the democratic process.
