Hon Iorwase Hembe And Hon Emmanuel Jime Task NASS On Fulani/Tiv Crisis.
Hon Emmanuel Jime |
FIVE persons, among them an army officer, identified as Lieu-tenant Chinedu Anyanwu, were feared dead in a renewed three days of sustained attacks by
armed herdsmen on villages and towns in the border communities of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Meanwhile several peope had been declared missing, while thousands of displaced persons now lived in camps far away from their homes to avoid attacks by the herdsmen.
Member representing Makurdi/Guma Fed const,Hon Emmanuel Jime made these submissions while moving a motion calling on the National Assembly to wade into the invasion of Fulani herdsmen into the local Government who also burnt down more than 1,000 home-steads in close to 100 compounds in the affected area, close to Udei town, the largest settlement in the area.
Disturbed by the recent attack, the lawmaker representing the constitu-ency, Hon Jime raised a motion of urgent importance at the National Assembly, stating that more than 34 persons had been killed by the Fulani herdsmen in a raid.Hundreds of displaced persons live in camps situated at Ortese, Daudu and Yelwetta.
Contributing to this motion Hon Iorwase Hembe, member representing Vandeikya/Konshisha Fed const, decried the situation whereby the fulani normads move around with their livestock and cause damage to peoples farms and properties,he called on the NASS to make a law against mobile cattle rearing.
Other members contributed to the motion and and urged the NASS to take urgent steps to end the terror on the tiv people.
The Fulani herdsmen and Tiv farmers of border communities in Benue and Nasarawa states reportedly left at least five people dead, including an army officer. The clash, the third this year occurred when herdsmen reportedly invaded Udei town to avenge the killing last month of the Fulani traditional ruler of Kadarko, Ardo Habibu Dono and four others allegedly by the Tiv farmers.
In February this year, a similar incident in Gwer-West local government of Benue state left 17 dead, leading to the deployment of soldiers to the area to restore order. The Benue state government then set up an eleven- member probe panel to look into the crisis and proffer a lasting solution. However, the committee’s job appeared to have yielded no fruitful result as the crisis escalates. Yet, another ten –man joint committee has once again been set up to investigate the current deadly skirmish, although there are reports that the Fulani
side has not been involved. The new committee, when properly constituted, should do a proper job by proffering a lasting solution that would help government put an end to the recurrence of such conflicts. Currently, report said that over 2,000 persons have been displaced as result of the renewed violence, which also left several houses and other property burnt. It is unfortunate that a recent reconciliation meeting convened by the governments of both states failed to achieve the desired result as one of the parties reportedly boycotted it.
