Hon Aminu Tambuwal Advocates For More Support For Social Media In Government, Condemns Comments By Senate President.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has urged for greater use of social media in governance in a remark quite opposite to comments from the senate president, David Mark, advocating a clamp down.Mark was quoted as saying the social media has been abused by youth who make use of the opportunities to insult government officials.Mark's comments drew widespread condemnation in the blogosphere and other social platforms prompting a retraction by the senate president.Speaking at the weekend on the “Role of social media in modern day politics” at the closing session of the 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Tambuwal said the use of social media in day to day governments offers unlimited opportunity for good governance and transparency.“I wish to recommend that African and other developing countries should support the programs and policies that will facilitate the development of social media infrastructures in their countries,” he said. Recalling the role played by the social media during the 2011 general election in Nigeria which saw President Goodluck Jonathan declaring to contest the presidential poll on Facebook, the speaker added that the Nigerian experience with the social media has shown how “decisive” a tool it is.Tambuwal called for greater investment in the provision of computers in the rural areas to develop the sector and tasked developing nations to develop ICT infrastructure.
