Christian & Muslim Leaders In Benue Sign Peace Accord,As NEMA Donates Relief Items To Displaced People.,



Following recent attack by suspected Fulani Herdsmen on Farming communities in Benue State both Christian and Muslim leaders in the state, yesterday, entered into an accord to work together in order to find lasting solution to the crisis.


This is as Governor Gabriel Suswam received items worth several millions of Naira from the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA)for people displaced as a result of continuous attack on their communities by Fulani Herdsmen.

The Christian and Muslim leaders also vowed to watch out, protect and stop any contemplated attack on one another in the wake of the crisis which they described and unfortunate.

This was part of the decisions reached at the end of a meeting between Christians, Muslims and the Hausa communities held in Makurdi, at the state headquarters of the Department of State Services, DSS, at the instance of the State Director of Security, SDS, Mr. Rasheed Adediran.

The agreement was signed on behalf of Christians by Arch. Bishop Yimam Orkwar
and Evangelist Gift Elanu, Benue State Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN Chairman and Secretary respectively, while Alhaji Garba Baba and Mustapha Garba signed as Chairman and secretary, Jama'Atu Nasir Islam, JNI, respectively.

"We the Muslim and Hausa community in Benue state want to disassociate ourselves from the crisis and also state emphatically that we are not involved in the crisis and should not be seen as a party", they said.

They urged the state and federal governments to take urgent steps to stop what they described as "the carnage" in the affected communities so that the displaced persons could return to their ancestral homes.

The religious leaders also pledged to take the peace message and accord to their congregations and communities and also, checkmate any form of religious crisis in the towns.

The governor who received the materials from the Zonal Head of NEMA Alhaji Abdul Salam Mohammed commended NEMA for coming to the aide of the displaced persons while assuring that the items will be distributed equitably to those it is meant for.

He said camps will be opened for those affected by the crises even as he warned that only people genuinely affected by the crises will be catered for.
