PDP,APC Supporters Clash In Benue Leaving Scores Injured.
Scores of persons were yesterday injured when youths suspected to be supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) allegedly disrupted a rally organised for defecting PDP members to All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ushongo local government area of Benue State.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the rally was meant to receive Hon. Thompson Ikyum who contested the State House of Assembly seat of Ushongo in 2011 under the platform of PDP, but lost to Hon. Terkimbi Kyange of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) now APC. Ikyum hails from Ikov ward of Ushongo local government area.
The rampaging PDP supporters stormed the LGEA Primary School Lessel, venue of the rally at about 9am and allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs at the arena. Several persons were injured and motorcycles destroyed in the process.
It was gathered that the organisers of the event had obtained police permit for the rally but the chairman of the council, Mr Terver Orduen allegedly claimed he was not notified of the rally and therefore sent thugs to disrupt it.
According to a source, the PDP thugs also dispersed APC supporters who had started arriving for the event. The police and other security agents conveyed those who were injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
However, the council chairman of Ushongo local government, Mr Terver Orduen denied the allegation and said that he was not aware of the rally and that he did not detail PDP supporters to disrupt the occasion. The media aide to the chairman, Mr Joseph Asawa quoted the council boss as describing the allegation as malicious and baseless.
