Lawmakers Serve Speaker, Hon Terhile Ayua Impeachment Notice!

With less than six weeks to the inauguration of the 8th State Assembly, the Benue State House of Assembly may change leadership,  as  members of the assembly have perfected plans to impeach their speaker.About 18 members have served the impeachment notice on the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Terhile Ayua.

Though the Assembly did not sit today, the members of the assembly held a closed door session with the Senate President who was there  negotiate terms and find a leeway for the speaker.
According to Ati Terkula's Blog, trouble started when the members felt that the Speaker, has not been able to defend the interests of the members before the governor.

The impeachment which is led by the Minority Leader, Hon. Benjamin Adanyi, is also believed to have been stemmed from the recent bills passed by the assembly where members of the opposition walked out of the sitting during deliberation of the Local Government, Benue Internal Revenue Service ( BIRS ), Chieftaincy Bills.

Meanwhile it was alleged that the Majority leader of the House, Hon. Paul Biam connived with members of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), and collected 50 million Naira from the governor to facilitate the smooth passage of the bills and sidelined the opposition members.

The closed door session ended with a resolve by the assembly to sit by six O’clock, but unknown to the members, the clerk of the house had directed his staff to lock the Chambers and securely lock mace, gavel and attendance books to forestall any unplanned occurrence which at the time of filling this report were under lock and key, even as he left before the end of the executive session.

It can be recalled that the members of the state Assembly are in a running battle with the state governor over owed three months salaries and allowances which caused the assembly members to vow to frustrate any bill sent by the governor in protest and consequently leading to the walkout which has culminated into this current crisis.
