Mzough U Tiv Backs Senator George Akume For President Of The Senate.

A short while ago, the Mdzough u Tiv under the leadership of Chief Engr Edward Iyorshaa Ujege threw its weight behind the candidacy of Senator George Akume for President of the Senate. The MUT President-General, accompanied by the Secretary-General of the Tiv socio-cultural umbrella organisation, Dr Boniface Ukende addressed the media in Abuja.

Below is an excerpt from the press statement read by Chief Ujege:

"Distinguished Senator George Akume was the first senator in the North Central region to decamp to the then opposition ACN, to join efforts with progressives to build a virile opposition for our rowing democracy, which eventually merged with other opposition parties to form the all progressives congress, APC, which Nigerians have found to be a credible alternative and have decided to give them their mandate for the next four years.

He single handedly brought, nurtured and built a formidable opposition in Benue State that has now succeeded in taking over the governorship of the state from the ruling party.

Senator Akume has provided excellent and credible leadership in the 7th senate as a ranking senator and the minority leader thereby bringing greater accountability to the upper legislative chambers and better results with the oversight functions of the National Assembly.

He has been a rallying figure for all opposition political politicians in the North Central since 2007 till date.

In view of the excellent leadership pedigree of Distinguished Senator George Akume, we call on all Nigerians and indeed the APC and all incoming senators to unanimously elect Senator George Akume as the next Senate President. Senator Akume is an asset which Nigeria must use at this time to create that needed change. We call on his party, the APC and the president-elect to grant him support to facilitate his election as the next President of the Senate."
