The Benue State Police Command yesterday said it has recovered the card reader device that was reportedly snatched from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), meant for the conduct last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Vandeikya local government area of the state.

The police also said they arrested five persons who were out to disrupt the electoral process in possession of two AK47 guns, one Mark 4 riffle loaded with 28 rounds of live ammunition as well as a knife and charms. Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Jimoh Ozi Obeh, stated this while briefing journalists in his office at the command’s headquarters in Makurdi, noting that the card reader machine was recovered in the bush at Aliade, the headquarters of Gwer East local government area following a tip-off.

According to him, when he got wind of the incident, he swiftly alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area, who went to the spot and recovered it and later handed it over to him. The police boss said last Saturday’s general elections in the state, was generally peaceful except in Logo and Konshisha local government areas where the INEC offices were set ablaze by hoodlums, saying the police were investigating the matter.

Obeh who expressed worry over the manner youths carried out what he called ‘wild jubilation’ in celebrating winners of last elections by setting bonfires on major streets using sticks, said he took time to meet with elders of the communities where such activities happened and pleaded with them to prevail on their wards against turning the celebration into violence.
