Benue Lawmakers Literally Fought For Their Political Ambitions.
Apparently, it isn’t only in Abuja where lawmakers can’t seem to agree on who will pilot their affairs in this new political dispensation.
Less than a month after their inauguration, legislators in the Benue State House of Assembly engaged in a physical free-for-all over the laid back issue of their choice of principal officers.
The fight, between lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress and those from the Peoples’ Democratic Party was even possible because Benue’s legislature is a rare test case where both parties are almost evenly represented.
The APC had sent a letter to the speaker seeking to appoint the majority leader for the Assembly.
The APC claims to hold a House majority because a PDP member elected on that party’s platform defected. But the PDP members are asking that the seat of the defecting lawmaker be declared vacant.
The said lawmaker, Mr Nick Eworo, hinged his defection on his expulsion from the PDP at the local government level. Interestingly, Eworo, in a Scandal-like twist of fate, was presented as the deputy majority leader by the APC.
The APC nominated the member representing Makurdi South State Constituency, Mr. Benjamin Adanyi, as the Majority Leader; Nick Eworo, representing Obi State Constituency as Deputy Majority Leader while the member representing, Vandeikya, Titus Uba, as Chief Whip of the House.
The PDP lawmakers quickly arrested the reading of the letter via a motion to declare the seat of Mr Eworo vacant in line with Section 190 of the 1999 constitution.
