Operatives of the Edo state police command arrested a young man for allegedly siphoning diesel from a truck belonging to a beverage company located at Ikpoba Hill, in Ikpoba Okha local government area of the state.

Daily Post reports that the unidentified man was caught by a vigilante in the area at about 4am on 27 May, who noticed some diesel on the ground around the parked truck.

The night guard reportedly traced the flow to the truck where he found the suspect siphoning petrol into some jerry cans. On sighting the vigilante, the thief tried to escape but was overpowered by residents after the guard raised the alarm.

Police officers from Aduwawa division arrived on the scene and saved the suspect from being lynched by the angry residents.

According to an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, the suspect confessed that he was a member of a gang that specialized in stealing petroleum from parked cars in the area.

“He (suspect) confessed that there are other people in the same business with him and that they have stolen more than 1,000 litres before. The truck belongs to one Mr. Imafidon and the guard who caught him said that he has been looking for those boys for sometime now.

“The residents, especially truck drivers, were angry after he demonstrated how he siphons the product. So, they tied him up and put the hose in his mouth,” the source said.

When contacted, Stephen Onwochei, the Edo police public relations officer, said that he was yet to be briefed on the incident. He added that the case could have been handled by the divisional police officer.
