Saraki Defends Dual Citizenship Status.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has officially responded to an online publication alleging he is not a Nigerian citizen and so does not qualify to hold any public office.
In a statement published on his facebook page and made available by Senate President’s Special Assistant on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, Saraki also debunked the online publication as false and an attempt to malign his personality.
The Senate President vowed to take the media outfit to court pending investigation by the UK government
Daily Independent had earlier reported Senator Saraki as already preparing to challenge the authenticity of the online publication in court.
In a statement, on Sunday, in Abuja, titled ‘In Defence of the Truth…’, Saraki referred to the publication as “dubious and utterly false report”
Relying on the Nigerian Constitution, he said what the report “is attempting to raise is moot – especially with regards to holding UK citizenship.”
He said Section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution discredits any argument that Senator Saraki is ineligible for public office.
According to him, the section clearly stipulates that ‘every person born outside Nigeria either of whose parents is a citizen of Nigeria’ are considered ‘citizens of Nigeria by birth’.
