Benue Opens Camp For Flood Victims At The New Makurdi International Market.
Benue State Government has officially opened a temporary shelter in Makurdi for flood displaced persons. The move followed a directive issued by the state deputy governor, Engr. Benson Abounu, that the new International Market, yet to commence commercial activities, be made available for the flood victims.
Mr. Boniface Ortese, the executive secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), yesterday, confirmed the opening of the temporary relief camp for flood victims around Makurdi metropolis.
Ortese hinted to Daily Trust on Sunday that the market was designated to serve as a camp because of the facilities there and its location.
Hope Abah reported that the International Market was built by former governor Gabriel Suswam at the twilight of his administration and equipped with ultra-modern facilities.
Other facilities in the market included motorised borehole, police post, and restaurant, toilets, banking hall, clinic, fire station and abattoir.
At the time of sending this report, Ortsee said that not less than 1, 000 people have been registered at the camp.
