Benue Reps Member, Hon Mark Gbillah Invents Trust Fund To Bankroll Credible Politicians In Office.

Credible Nigerian whose dreams of seeking elected offices are shattered by the high cost of electioneering expenses will soon get a life-line as there are plans to establish a trust fund for the purpose of bankrolling their election expenses.

This trust fund, if established, will be saddled with the responsibility of carrying out detailed search on individuals with high moral standing, qualification, proper and fit to vie for any elected offices for sponsorship.

Initiator of the project, Hon Mark Terseer Gbilah, representing Gwer-east /Gwer-west Federal Constituency of Benue State told our correspondent that the trust fund would draw its resources from voluntary contributions of ordinary Nigerians and shall be managed by people of proven integrity.

Gbillah pointed out that globally recognised accounting firms will also be involved in both investment and management of the funds with the view to achieve transparency and sustainability, adding that a comprehensive website would equally be created in other to bring people up to speed with every step taken by the trust fund.

He revealed that social media platforms will also be created to afford Nigerians within and outside Nigeria as well as other nationals the opportunity to interact, seek clarifications and information regarding the trust fund and its management.

The federal lawmaker stressed further that, the establishment of the trust fund will eliminate the current trend, where elected offices go to the highest bidders at the expense of merit, integrity, credibility and competence.

According to him, the coming on board of the trust fund will further return the ownership of the electoral process to the electorate and make those who get into public offices realise, that they hold such mandates only in trust, therefore must be accountable to the people.
He maintained that the trust fund will be saddled with the responsibility of sponsoring candidates, who meet the set out standard and criteria for elections into public offices at all levels, beginning from the council wards to the presidential elections.

Gbillah expressed concerns over the influx of people into politics, whose sources of wealth are questionable.
