Pictures: Kebbi, Lagos Partnership Enhances Food Security – Gov Ambode

The Lagos State governor, Akinwumi Ambode has described the recent signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agriculture by his state and Kebbi State as significant to achieving self sufficiency in food production in the country.

Governor Ambode who was hosted by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State made the remarks at the weekend in Birnin Kebbi while on one day official visit to Kebbi State where he toured some rice farms.

It would be recalled that both Kebbi and Lagos states had agreed to cooperate and use their comparative advantages to expand the production of agricultural produce in Nigeria.

He said the partnership with Kebbi is a follow up to what Lagos State believes is the future of Nigeria.

“We believe we should be able to feed ourselves and Kebbi State being the largest producer of rice and Lagos being the largest consumer we thought we could synergize to reduce the importation of rice in the country. The future of Nigeria lies in this agreement,” he said.

He pointed out that Lagos consumes about N300 billion worth of rice annually. “This partnership will reduce importation and feed over 75 percent of Nigerians. In the next six months Lagos State will set up a rice mill that will produce 20 tons of rice per hour. That is our target and we will deliver it before Christmas,” the governor said.

He opined that they have engaged technical experts from Mexico and were already partnering them in the agreement that was signed. “They are here and in the next six months Kebbi and Lagos would be producing rice jointly to the benefit of humanity and Nigerians,” he said.
