If it means writing a petition to stop sugar daddies, I’ll do it —Actress Sandra Omo
Disturbed by the negative indices of HIV/AIDS spread and pre-marital pregnancy among young Nigerian girls, Hollywood-Nollywood actress and model, Sandra Omo, has taken a swipe against the primacy of the intergenerational s3x icon known as Sugar Daddy in Nigeria.
Based in London, Omo, who played a minor role in one of James Bond 007 series in 2011, recently returned to Nigeria to embark on a nationwide campaign against sugar daddies.
Backed with statistics the MBGN diaspora winner argued in an interview with Saturday Tribune that the existence of sugar daddies contributes to the spread of HIV/AIDS and pre-marital pregnancy among teenage girls in Nigeria to the effect that Nigeria has the highest number of teenage fertility in Africa.
Citing recent stats from National Population Commission (NPC) she said, “One in three girls get pregnant before leaving high school in the North, while one in ten girls leave secondary school with pregnancy in the South. Nigeria has the highest number of teenage fertility in Africa and we are beginning to have a HIV epidemic amongst teenage girls. Who is responsible for this pregnancies and disease spread?
“Unlike the younger boys, who are somewhat constrained by parental fear, finance and inexperience, older men have the wherewithal, the loose moral base and the dangerous motive to lure these young women into unprotected s3x, which, due to their flippancy, will lead not only to pregnancy, but also the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS.
“We have what is called the vicious circle. You have the sugar daddies, who have s3x with these young girls, who later have s3x with the young men. In the end, these young girls pass HIV and other s3xually transmitted disease from the older men to the younger men. And if we do not speak up now, these younger men will become the sugar daddies of the future then the circle continues. So, it has to stop now,” she stated.
Omo, who in collaboration with D-Pize and J-Pal was responsible for a similar campaign in Bostwana and Gambia, disclosed she would do whatever it took to end the reign of sugar daddies and intergenerational s3x in Nigeria.
Describing relationships between girls and men much older than them as a slave-master relationship, she called on the government to intervene, “I am calling on the government to pay attention to the menace. Even if I have to write a petition against sugar daddies, I will do that,” she said.
“Our concern is not about grown-up women who have the capacity to make their own decision. The reason we are focusing on young girls is that when a younger girl is with an older man, it is more like a slave master relationship, because they don’t even have the mental capacity to negotiate self s3x. She wouldn’t be the one to tell the older guy to use a condom because she doesn’t even know why. And a lot of these older men want younger girls because of the popular motive of refreshing their blood.
Omo also said that her campaign emblem, “No Sugar Daddy, Bright Future” would be launching on empowerment activities for teenagers in some secondary schools of select states of the federation.
