MDCN Tries Suntai’s Doctor For Leaking His Health Status

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, has dragged a doctor to Taraba State governor Danfulani Danbaba Suntai, Dr Zakari Aliyu – who is also the medical director of the Taraba State Specialist Hospital – before its tribunal, for allegedly divulging information about the ailing governor’s health status to the press, contrary to the ethics of his profession.

However, when his case came up for hearing on Thursday, at the tribunal’s sitting, he was said to have relocated to the United States.
A letter which he wrote to the tribunal via mail was read by the secretary of the tribunal. In it, he apologised for his absence, saying he was no longer resident in Nigeria and has since relocated to the United States.

He, however, denied receiving any of the tribunal’s summonses, considering that his address has since changed. “I got to know of the request to appear before the tribunal through the newspapers,” the letter read.
The doctor pled for more time to prepare adequately, so that he can attend the next sitting of the tribunal.

Meanwhile, the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has commenced the trial of 11 medical practitioners allegedly accused of various offences contrary to the ethics of the profession.

The chairman of the tribunal, Dr Jonathan Uzoatuegwu, noted that the tribunal is expected to dispense justice in a professional respect and uphold the ethical conduct of the medical profession.

Others to be arraigned for trial include, Dr David Emmanuel Udo, a senior medical officer at a cottage hospital in Ekpene Obo Village, in Akwa Ibom, who is alleged to have diverted patients to his private clinic.

Udo is being arraigned on a six -count charge of owning a private clinic, diverting patients to his clinic, carrying out a major surgery on one Mrs Imaobong Ime Archibong and releasing her medical history, which is supposed to be confidential – to be published.

Dr Godwin Ugbam a paediatric surgeon who operates a private hospital known as Abram Vineyard Clinic, in Enugu, was accused of “negligently performing a major surgery of prostatectomy on one Alexandra Chibueze without keeping proper record of the management of the patient.
