Heavy Down Pour Wrecks Havoc As House Submerge Under Water In Benue.

A heavy down pour pounded the Benue State capital, Makurdi, from midnight on Monday till daybreak on Tuesday, leaving in its wake submerged residential houses and business premises in the metropolis and many other towns.
Some of the flooded areas, including Agber village, new Otukpo Road, Wadata and Gboko Road revealed the havoc to residences, motor parks and shops, all submerged under water. Some of the residents disclosed that flooding in their areas has been a yearly occurrence due to poor drainage or an absolute lack of it.
At the garage of Pleasure Travel Transport Company, located opposite Benue Links Company on Gboko Road, over 20 vehicles were noticed buried in the flood water, quite similar to the situation in other parks located in
other areas. Members of staff of the company were seen evacuating their belongings from their offices
after a machine was brought in to flush out the rampaging flood. Reacting to the development, proprietor of the company, Dr. Paul Ubwa,
called on the state government to expedite on flood control.
Ubwa said he had complained to the state Ministry of Works and Hijack Construction Company on the need for a box culvert in the adjourning area but to no avail, noting that the existing one is too small to contain the volume
of water that passes through.
He further called on sanitation authorities in the state to check the activities of hawkers in the area, who usually drop waste in the gutter,
which eventually blocks the small culvert and cause flooding.
“As a result of flooding last year, the company had seven of its vehicles damaged by water. If
nothing is done to convert the existing culvert into a box, the company will continue to pass through this calamity every year,” Ubwa lamented.
