How Zulu King's Utterances Sparked Xenophobic Violence In South Africa On Monday.

Zulu King

KING Goodwill Zwelithini of Zululand made some unguarded utterances that allegedly incited the ongoing xenophobic violence against African immigrants in South Africa. In a speech last month, Zwelithini said “foreigners must pack their bags and go home” because it was unacceptable that locals were being made to compete with people from other countries for the few economic opportunities they had available.

Since the violence began, Zwelithini has attempted to water down the inflammatory remarks saying attacking the foreigners was not the way to chase them away and called on the government to do it legally.
Meanwhile he is expected to host a public gathering in Durban on Monday in an effort to quell the xenophobia sweeping the country.

The king is expected to address the public directly in order to clarify his statement against foreigners which have been blamed for the recent violence.

South African Human Rights Commission says it had received more than eight formal complaints over inflammatory comments reportedly made by the king about foreign nationals last month in Pongola.

The violence that has claimed at least  lives has since spread to downtown Pretoria as immigrants were arming themselves against the unrelenting xenophobic attacks.
