A Team of Surgeons at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola in the Adamawa State, North-Easter part of Nigeria early this month made a breakthrough, in separating a 2 months baby girl with deformity clinically identified as a rare congenital abnormal defect called "dipygus". Medically, these type of deformity are caused by a malformed fetus that has a double pelvics, one of which is usually not fully developed.Continue to see more pictures.

The story behind this baby is that however, the baby is fathered by a 23 year old Malam Mani Ladu Konkol the husband and the wife Ramatu 16 years old in Konkol a district of Maiha LGA of Adamawa State in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. Although the pregnancy was celebrated by the family of both the bride and the groom, however, the newly born baby was reduced to a superstition of having been brought a bad omen to the family and the community at large. It was a new born baby girl the people of the community dreaded getting close to. The stigmatisation almost led to the parents of the baby to throw her into the bush when wisdom went into the mind of the husband to take the baby to a hospital and so the baby was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola. 

The parents of the baby were initially superstitiously warned that any attempt to detach the parasitic legs would lead to the death of the parents. After thorough clinical evaluation the issue was tabled and exhausted by team of surgeons bearing in mind the financial implications and the status of the family financially. While the family of Mani and other relative were contemplating on how to go about the whole issue the Social Welfare Scheme of the centre under the approval of the Management of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola came to their rescue and travelled to the Village in Maiha and met with the entire family to seek their approval and support.

When Professor Auwal said after the successful surgery, which they termed as breakthrough recording another milestone in Federal Medical Centre, Yola, he explained the scenario as that of a Parasitic conjoined twins that was needed to be removed to avoid discomfort in the growth of the child. The parasite, he said, has had a pelvis and two abnormal rather non-functional legs attached and the legs were joined to a parasite pelvis which was also attached to the normal pelvis. The girl had two female external genitals with a single kidney.
