Whistle-blower, blogger remanded for cyber bullying

The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned a self-acclaimed whistleblower, Dennis Ukpabi, and a blogger, Fejiro Oliver, for cyber stalking.

It was learnt that Ukpabi, who is a former employee of Sterling Bank Plc, was arrested for publishing a book titled, ‘The Whistleblower’, in which he accused some employees of the bank – Adekanla Desalu, Eguru Nyenke, Janet Akpan and Kojusola Ajao – of fraud.

Ukpabi also alleged that after exposing the fraud in the bank, one of his colleagues involved in the fraud was promoted because she was dating an executive director at the bank.

Ukpabi and Oliver were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday on five charges bordering on alleged acts of ‘cyber stalking’, which are said to be punishable under the provisions of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention etc) Act, 2015.

The first charge read, “That you Dennis Ukpabi and Tega Oghenero between 1st – 13th February, 2017 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of Federal High Court, conspired together to commit felonies, namely, knowingly and intentionally sending intimidated, hatred, insulting and needless anxiety messages and thereby committing an offence punishable under section 27 (1) (b) of Cybercrime (prohibition, prevention etc Act 2015).”

Another charge read that the accused sent offensive messages to Desalu, Busola Awosile, Nyenke and Adeyemi Odubiyi, which are said to be ‘’punishable under section 24 (1) (b) of Cybercrime (prohibition, prevention etc Act 2015.’’

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecution counsel, who is also a Superintendent of Police, Mr. J. Oloruntoba, asked the court to remand the defendants in prison custody. Frantic efforts were made by lawyers representing the two defendants; Mrs. Kitan and Mr. Inibehe Effiong, to persuade the court to admit them to bail.

Effiong, who is a human rights lawyer, informed the court that the defendants were accosted by the police and arraigned surreptitiously without proper and adequate notice.

The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, asked the defendants’ counsel to bring a formal application for bail and promised to hear it expeditiously.

The judge remanded them in Ikoyi Prisons.

Prominent Political Blogger Stabbed to Death.

A prominent political blogger and democratic rights activist who used his Web presence to poke fun at the religious and political establishment of the Maldives was found stabbed to death Sunday.

Yameen Rasheed, who ran a blog called The Daily Panic, is the third media figure to be targeted in the archipelago in the past five years. The 29-year-old was found in the stairwell of his apartment in the capital Malé, with multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest, the Guardian reports. Family members said that he died in hospital shortly after arriving.

According to the Guardian, Rasheed, who ran the popular website alongside his day job in IT, was arrested in 2015 and jailed for three weeks after marching in an anti-government rally in Malé. A friend said that Rasheed had regularly been threatened with death, which he had reported to the police.

His death follows a 2012 stabbing attack on another blogger, Ismail Rasheed (a.k.a. Hilath), and the murder of lawmaker Afrasheem Ali that same year. A journalist, Ahmed Rilwan, disappeared in 2014 and has not been seen since.

Calling The Daily Panic "the Maldives’ only news website," Rasheed wrote that he wanted to "cover and comment upon the news, satirize the frequently unsatirizable politics of Maldives." His final entry was dated April 4.

Known for it's beautiful beaches and luxury tourist resorts, the Maldives has remained politically tense since its first democratically elected President Mohamed Nasheed was deposed in 2012. The nation also faces a radicalization problem, with an increasing number of young men joining militant groups in Syria, according to the Guardian. Defamation laws are also routinely used against journalists, and the government under President Abdulla Yameen, has either arrested or exiled every opposition leader in the country.

Bangladesh Upholds Death Penalties In Blogger Murder

Court-gavel

Bangladesh’s High Court on Sunday upheld death sentences handed out to two Islamists for the murder of a secularist blogger in 2013, an official said.

The court passed the judgment more than a year after the convicts challenged the penalty handed down by a lower court in the killing of Ahmed Rajib Haider, prosecutor Jahirul Haq said.

The court also upheld various jail terms for six others, including Jashim Uddin Rahmani, leader of the banned Islamist group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).

A Dhaka court on December 31, 2015 sentenced Mohammad Faysal Bin Nayeem Deep and Redwanul Azad Rana to death for the murder of Haider, a blogger known by his pen name Thaba Baba.

Deep and Rana were students at a private university and are believed to have been radicalized by the ABT.

Rana has been in hiding since February 15, 2013, when Haider was hacked to death by machete near his home in Dhaka’s Mirpur neighbourhood. He was sentenced in absentia.

In the years following the Haider murder, Bangladesh experienced a wave of militant attacks on bloggers, priests, academics, rights activists and foreign nationals by jihadist groups.

The deadliest attack was carried out on July 1, 2016 at a café in Dhaka’s Gulshan diplomatic area, killing nine Italians, seven Japanese, an Indian, a US citizen and two Bangladeshis.

Two policemen and six suspected attackers were killed as army commandos stormed the café the next morning.

In the last nine months, the security forces have killed more than 60 suspects in a series of anti-militant raids launched in response to the café attack.

part, and see you're not wearing the 'dress code' for the party, you will be sent home.

OMG ! Video Blogger SHOT for Exposing DL men Online

It ain’t easy being an investigative blogger. Ask Markeith Rivers, aka “DL Detective”, who makes it his mission to expose down low men who are out there slanging D to unsuspecting women (and men).

Rivers stated his “calling” is to expose DL men because, he says, black women are being affected by so-called heterosexual men who are sleeping with other men on the low.

Rivers videotapes his encounters with DL men and then posts the videos online.

According to StraightfromtheA.com, Rivers is recovering nicely after he was shot by a DL man he exposed in one of his videos.

StraightfromtheA.com — While specific details of the shooting are unknown, there’s been a buzz on social media for a few weeks now that Rivers was robbed and shot in his home state of North Carolina back in December by one of the men he exposed online.

Now Rivers has re-emerged with a statement and says it was definitely one of his conquests who tried to kill him.

Online stories reported that the ‘DL DETECTIVE’ was shot last month and stated, ‘Whoever shot him also robbed him. The person also set Rivers car on fire. Apparently someone posted Rivers address online after a video he posted earlier this week.”

Rivers gained notoriety over the years after he made it his mission to expose a pastor in Charlotte as gay.
