Benue Links G.M Raises Alarm Over Fraud At The Transport Company.
According to National Mirror,Large scale fraud has engulfed the Benue State government mass transit outfit known as Benue Links Nigeria Ltd.
The company, which operates as a public limited liability has in its fleet over 200 leased vehicles.
We gathered that workers were now in alliance with owners of the leased vehicles to defraud the company of huge amounts, running into hundreds of thousands of naira, due to non-remittance of the mandatory 20 per cent contractual agreement between the company and the private vehicle owners.
It was also gathered that the affected staff members had been ordered to refund the money in question, following discovery of the alleged fraud by the company’s auditors.
General Manager of Benue Links, John Baka said the alleged fraud was committed between May and August 2014.
“When I sensed shady deals within the organisation, I quickly invited external auditors to audit the accounts of the company and it was discovered that some of our staff in connivance with private operators in our fleet defrauded the company of huge sums of money totaling N618,000.
“Since the discovery, I have directed the staff involved to refund the money to the company within one week and, as I speak with you, I understand that part of the money is already remitted into the company’s coffers.
“However, punitive measures will be taken against those who are involved in the fraud after the one week ultimatum which is due to expire tomorrow,” he said.
Baka regretted that the fraud was at the instance of unemployed graduates whom he recruited with aim to be paying their emolument from the 20 per cent lease agreement with private vehicle partners “but unfortunately, they chose to divert the funds.”
